Challenges of Moving Video over the Public Internet

The Internet has become the ultimate platform for global distribution of digital media. As bandwidth capacity has increased and pricing has decreased, the Internet has finally become a viable alternative for the transmission of contribution-quality video and broadcast signal acquisition. However, there are a number of technical and operational issues that must be overcome when attempting to transmit live, broadcast-quality video over the Public Internet:

  • Packet Loss: Because video is latency-sensitive, any loss or reordering of data packets over an IP network greatly impacts the quality of video and can cause video errors and link resets.
  • Packet Delay: In the public Internet, all IP packets are treated equally. Time-critical video traffic will receive the same priority as delay-tolerant email traffic, which puts video packets at risk for significant delays in the face of long router queues.
  • Packet Jitter: Jitter can often cause video motion to appear jerky and cause audio synchronization problems.
